Have you ever felt that way? Have you ever been so dumbfounded by a decision you made that you really wondered what planet you were visiting at the time? I know I have. It is gut wrenching, soul crushing and emotionally debilitating.

Then what?

When I was in the throes of angst over a decision that turned out badly, my mothers’ response was always, “Ok? Now what are you going to do about it?” That always shocked me back into reality because made me understand that I had a choice. I could shut down and let the decision paralyze me or I could use it as opportunity to change. It was my responsibility to decide what to do next. I was the only person who could make that happen.

It was only later in life, as I pursued my interest in meditation and the ways of the mystic that I discovered just how right my mother was. Life has a way of forcing us into dipping below the emotional chaos of the ego to find a way to listen to the truth of what our soul is trying to say. We try to make excuses and get caught in the “what if’s” or “if I had only known” or blame the situation or the person involved. I call those “wallowing in mind fights” which are desperate attempts to avoid looking at the truth where I could pretend I was a victim of circumstance. Or I could see it as an opportunity to finally dive into my core of fear and ask, “What do I really want?” When you are in that place of inner reflection, what I call, “being the belly button,” there is no where else to turn but into your soul. Pema Chödrön calls this attitude “the wisdom of no escape.”

This shift in attitude, while sometimes difficult and messy emotionally, can be so very liberating. Instead of spinning around in the “What if’s” we shift into the reality of “Ok, now what?” Here there is no blame, no fear, no excuses, only the reality of the situation and choosing to have clarity of looking at it from a different perspective. You have a choice. What do you really want? Only you can choose.
