Curious About Taking A Chance On Yourself?

When I made the decision to leave a very secure, corporate position to open my own practice my husband was quite frankly, horrified. I will never forget the look of shock on his face. He stood there frozen to the family room floor. Time seemed to come to screeching halt. I held my breath. What he said next surprised me. He said that if this was really something I felt I needed to do then fine, but I had to make a promise. If I couldn’t get my practice up off the ground in three months I had to promise to go out and find a ‘real job.’ Quite honestly I was impressed. I thought that was a fair bargain because when you got right down to it I didn’t know if I could make it in private practice, either. I had never done anything like this before. Scared to the bottom of my socks, I agreed.

All my life I had been searching for what I was really meant to be doing. I had no idea what “it” was but that didn’t stop the longing. Getting certified in the healing arts changed all of that for me. Intuitively, I knew that I had finally found my calling. It spoke to my soul, but it was also quite clear that it was a now or never moment for me. Now that I knew what I was meant to do I had to do something about it. I held my breath and took a leap of faith and opened a healing arts practice. My husband, God bless him, held down the fort without one word of complaint even though he didn’t believe in energy work at all. Those first few months weren’t financially easy, but he kept his opinion to himself. I am eternally grateful for trusting that leap of faith despite my fear and misgivings because it changed our lives for the better. We have never looked back.

When I first started training in the healing arts I wasn’t sure about any of it to be honest. I came into energy work by prayer and chance. My life had been saved by a young healer after I had a near death experience. That health crisis eventually led to a diagnosis and doctors told me it would be a couple of years before I would be healthy enough to return to work. Energy work had me back at work in less than three months. For the first time in my life, I felt healthy. No small feat I can assure you. When that young man, who saved me, offered to train me in energy work I thought, quite frankly, that he was nuts.

Going to his first course offering was done purely out of curiosity. That’s all. Nothing more. Day one of that training felt like a fire had been ignited inside of me. It rocked me to my core and took my breath away. For the first time in my life, I felt alive, inspired, free. I wanted to know more. I wanted to know everything. By the time, I completed my certification a year later there was no question in my mind that I had to find a way to do this for a living. There was one small problem, I had absolutely no idea where to start.

That little dilemma forced me to take stock of my life. What did I know? I had the passion and the drive but what tools did I have that would help me get started? The one thing I realized that I did have going for me was the fact that I grew up working in the family business. My father was self-made businessman who started life as an orphan with precious little education. He had taught himself how to read and write and eventually talked his way into getting a job working in a printing shop in order to learn the trade. By the time the Great Depression rolled around he had six mouths to feed and a deep desire to be his own boss. With nothing but a dream, a loan from a friend and a lot of chutzpah he opened his own printing shop.

By the time I popped up into the mix, twenty years later, there were eight kids in total. We were all put to work in the shop at a very early age. We did everything from answering the phones, to taking orders, and making deliveries. We learned by osmosis and hard work. My brothers all eventually became printers. I went on to become a Medical Technologist eventually transitioning into the corporate world as a manager. All that wonderful experience growing up in a business environment however was still not enough to ensure that running my own business was going to guarantee any success. Of that I was keenly aware.

I needed advice. Not knowing who to talk to I sat down in meditation and asked for divine guidance. In that meditation I was gifted with five steps that showed me what my financial potential could be. That in itself helped to relieve so much fear. It served as a way to carve out my dream of what I really wanted in my own business. The five steps helped me to structure what I wanted to manifest in my practice. It showed me how to create clear boundaries around seeing clients so that I could still have the free time I craved to spend more time with my family.

I launched my practice using the principles outlined in these five easy steps. By the end of three months there was no doubt that I was going to make a go of this. We were going to be just fine, much to my husband’s relief! Within three years I had a thriving healing arts practice, a one year waiting list and international client base. My practice was built by word of mouth. I never advertised.

I have now been in practice for over twenty years, and I have always been passionate about helping clients see their own potential and embrace it. I love sharing what I have learned. Teaching what I know is the next logical step in helping others recognize, embrace, and achieve their own full potential. My course offerings have always been born out of the desire to help others recognize where and how they can be of service to their own communities wherever possible. We are seeing a huge shift in human consciousness and energy work is one more tool that people can use to find harmony and balance within.

I have helped numerous other practitioners launch their own businesses during that time by sharing what I learned from running my own practice. One thing that I have witnessed and discussed with other practitioners is how much we need more healing arts practitioners. The request for services continues to grow. There is no shortage of demand for people looking for support as they find their way back to health and well being. We are desperately in need of more practitioners!

I have taught these 5 Easy Steps for several years now and have seen firsthand how it has helped others launch their own private practices. This exercise can be applied to just about any type of business model although what I am offering is being presented as a vehicle to explore opening and managing a healing arts practice.
